How It Works:
The SolaRay system has two main parts – a solar collector and a storage tank. Flat-plate collectors are mounted on the roof. Tubes run through the collector and carry an antifreeze solution being heated. A circulator pump moves the liquid between the collector and the storage tank. A heat exchanger in the storage tank isolates the domestic water from the antifreeze.
Your system will be custom sized to meet 100% of your domestic hot water needs in the summer months when you’ll achieve the greatest solar gain. On cloudy days or in the winter months, your system may only meet a portion of your total domestic hot water needs. The balance is taken care of with your existing hot water system.
To get the best performance from your solar hot water system, the collectors should be mounted in a location with southern exposure where they’ll receive direct sunlight (unshaded) at least between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm. Carefully consider the Sun’s path in the winter and summer to prevent shading from trees, chimneys and other buildings.
