“I love the convenience of having power on a consistent basis. Independent Power has been very responsive to my questions and always helpful to explain aspects of the system.”

Our Solar Electric Systems
An off-grid path to energy independence!
How It Works:

Off-grid solar electric systems consist of solar panels (photovoltaic modules), a battery bank and control and safety equipment. Because of the climate in Maine, our systems will include a generator to charge batteries when there is not enough sunlight.

When the sun shines on your solar modules, direct current (DC) is produced. The DC power is stored in a bank of batteries specifically designed for your application. A generator will charge batteries when there is not enough sunlight. The generator can also be wired to handle certain heavy electrical loads. The stored DC current from the battery bank is then converted into AC house current by an inverter. The household current produced by the inverter is the same, if not cleaner than, utility power.

To get the best performance from your solar electric system, photovoltaic modules should be mounted in a location with southern exposure where they’ll receive direct sunlight (unshaded) at least between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm. Consider both summer and winter paths of the sun to prevent shading from trees, chimneys and other buildings.
